In October, my little sister Katie and I visited the beautiful island of Santorini, Greece! Not only was every doorway and piece of architecture captivating, but the history of the island is so unique because of all it’s volcanic activity. The people there seem so resilient, and so much of the history has survived and lives on.
We stayed at two different Airbnbs in order to get to experience more of the island during our trip, one in the small fishing village of Ammoudi (just down the cliff from Oia), which I HIGHLY recommend because it’s easily accessible by road. It turns out that most of Oia (the parts you see in photos on the cliff-side) is only accessible on foot, which makes sense once you see the steep slope where the village sits. Then we also stayed closer to the middle of the island in the wine country area, in a small village called Vourvoulous.
Wine making seems to be a main focus on the island, with which I had zero problem! ;) We even toured an underground wine museum, where they used to create, store, and age wine during production — the scent was so unique and sweet, and some of the wine’s consistency bordered more on syrup than liquid. Long story short, they take their wine very seriously!
Trip highlights, among many, were: half-day trip catamaran cruise with some DC friends we met while in Greece, visiting the wine museum, enjoying wine on our balcony in Ammoudi, the chicken gyro at Let’s Eat, hiking in Oia at sunset, mastiha and cocktails at Fino, and getting lost in Pyrgos Kallistis.
My biggest travel tip for Santorini is to rent an ATV to get around vs a car, some of the switch back roads aren’t for the faint of heart, so I felt much more comfortable in a smaller, slower vehicle.
