Yesterday I met with a sweet couple planning a garden wedding at Villa Terrace later this year. Aside from the fact that I fell in love with them when we met, I was very intrigued when they mentioned they were considering a ‘First Look.’ Conveniently, it’s one of my favorite topics to get into during an initial consultation, so I’m taking the opportunity today to share my favorite 3 reasons that a First Look might be the perfect option for your wedding day.

1 // A moment alone:  It will come as no surprise that some couples rarely get 2 minutes alone, just the two of them, on their wedding day until after the entire party/reception has ended. A First Look provides a wonderful opportunity to see each other for a few moments before the day has flown by completely. It gives you time to see each other in relative privacy, instead of in front of hundreds of guests as you walk down the aisle during your ceremony. While it can be a beautiful + emotion-filled moment, sadly the moment can quickly be diminished by guests’ screens, tables, and cameras all pointed in your direction. Often, a First Look can be a chance to see each other without distractions and helps couples relax + breathe easier proceeding into the ceremony.

2 // Relaxed portraits:  Once you see each other, you can also opt to take some of your couple’s and/or bridal party portraits before the ceremony. This makes a huge difference if you plan to have a later afternoon ceremony or a short cocktail hour, and keeps things running on time so that you can relax + enjoy your day.

3 // Cocktail hour:  If you opt for a First Look + portraits before the ceremony, it makes it possible to attend your own cocktail hour! You’ve invited all of your family + close friends, and they’d all love to see you + visit during the cocktail hour. As a photographer, I’d love nothing more than to let you relax + enjoy a cocktail with all of your loved ones on your special day, having done your portraits earlier in the day. This also allows me to take candid photos of you + your guests at cocktail hour, giving you the type of natural images you consistently see in my portfolio.
